Agave syrup is a natural sugar and honey substitute with a distinctive mild flavour and hints of caramel. It is ideal as a sweetener for drinks, pancakes, porridge, cakes and desserts. Its unique flavour is a perfect match for meat dishes and seafood. The product has an extremely high sweetness level, thanks to which even a small amount of agave syrup can give the right amount of sweetness to the food.
Coming from North America, and more specifically from Mexico, agave syrup is a natural liquid sweetener with a taste and consistency similar to honey. The high fructose content of the product makes it very sweet. It is much sweeter than popular sweeteners including sugar, honey and maple syrup. This is very effective - to make a dessert or dish sweeter, you only need to add a small amount of syrup, much less than other sweeteners. Compared to regular sugar, it has half the glycaemic index and can be part of a low GI diet.
Dark agave syrup is widely used in the kitchen. Unlike other syrups, it adds a noticeable caramel note that gives dishes and drinks a distinctive flavour. The fact that the syrup can be heated makes it an excellent substitute for sugar and honey in homemade baked goods.
Warning: Please note that agave syrup darkens when exposed to high temperatures. For this reason, it is advisable to reduce the temperature inside the oven from 15 °C to +25 °C before baking!
