Juniperus communis, commonly known as juniper, is a slow-growing evergreen shrub or small tree in the Cupressaceae family.

Juniperus usually grows as a low, spreading shrub with dense foliage, although it can sometimes take on a tree-like form. It has scaly, dark green leaves arranged in overlapping pairs. The plant produces small, berry-like cones, known as juniper berries, which start green and ripen to a bluish-black colour.

Native to Europe, Asia and North America, the juniper thrives in a wide range of habitats including heathland, woodland, rocky slopes and barren landscapes. It can tolerate poor soils and is often found in dry, rocky or sandy areas.

Juniper is dioecious, meaning that individual plants are either male or female. The female plants produce small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, which are pollinated by the wind. The fertilised flowers develop into berries which take about two to three years to ripen.

Juniper berries are used as a culinary spice, especially in European cuisine, where they add a piney, citrusy flavour to dishes such as venison, sauerkraut and marinades. They are also used to flavour gin and other alcoholic beverages. In traditional medicine, juniper berries have been used for their potential diuretic, antiseptic and digestive properties.

Overall, the juniper is a versatile and resilient plant of culinary, ornamental and ecological importance, valued for its beauty, utility and cultural heritage.
