White willow herb tea

Salix alba, commonly known as white willow, is a deciduous tree belonging to the willow (Salix) genus and the Salicaceae family. It can be found in Europe and Western Asia and was later exported to various other regions of the world.

The white willow is a medium to large sized tree with a straight trunk and a wide open crown. The leaves are lance-shaped, narrow, with a silvery white underside. The bark is greyish-brown and becomes furrowed with age.

White willow usually grows in moist environments such as riverbanks, floodplains and marshes.

A salicin compound can be found in the bark of the tree.

Raffaele Piria (20 August 1814, Scilla - 18 July 1865, Turin) was an Italian chemist from Scilla who lived in Palma. The chemist converted the substance salicin into sugar and salicylic acid, the main component of the analgesic Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).
