Glycerin suppositories are a mild anti-constipation remedy designed to facilitate bowel movements. Glycerin suppositories facilitate bowel movements in several ways. Upon contact with the mucous membrane, a defecation reflex is induced. Glycerin softens stagnant feces, increases their amount in the lower part of the large intestine, and causes a gliding effect. This makes the bowel movement quick and easy. A glycerin suppository keeps its shape for a long time – it does not dissolve on its own, and the liquid in the rectum is too little to dissolve the suppository. Due to this feature, suppositories are left almost unchanged after emptying.
